Mandatory Class Participation and Attendance. A majority
of your grade in a theatre class is based on your participation in every
assignment. You must at least try and have a good attitude. Failure to
at least try results in a zero for the assignment and a negative
attitude negatively affects your grade.
-
Humor is encouraged, but it should never be used at the
expense of others. Please use good taste. Be sensitive to others.
-
Rehearse your presentations carefully to avoid any
statements, gestures, or actions that might be perceived as offensive to
others.
-
Avoid racially or gender-related offensive stereotypical
characteristics.
-
Avoid materials with coarse or inappropriate language or
offensive subject matter. See Mrs. Denney prior to performances for
approval if there is any doubt in your mind about that suitability of
the material.
-
Avoid inappropriate sexual references and innuendoes.
-
Avoid scenes that portray substance abuse unless it is
keeping with intent of the playwright.
-
Avoid profanity, vulgarities of speech or action,
cursing, or bathroom humor.
-
Be aware that students in this classroom are a captive
audience. Be considerate of everyone's feelings. You are responsible for
what you say and do in front of such an audience.
-
Be in your assigned seat when the bell rings or you will
be tardy.
-
Dispose of garbage when you leave the classroom.
-
Respect the room and its furnishings.
-
Do not enter Mrs. Denney's office without permission.
-
Do not touch or move any materials in the black box.
-
Make up work is totally your responsibility. Get the
phone numbers of three classmates to obtain missed assignments.
-
As this is a theatre class please behave as cultured,
educated young adults.
-
Detentions can be assigned for unacceptable behavior and
tardies. Detention must be served before school from 7:45-8:15. If you
misbehave and earn a detention it is your responsibility to arrange
transportation.
-
No HATS in the black box or theatre.
-
Do not ask to use the bathroom during a lecture,
discussion or performance. You may use the bathroom only when it will
not disrupt class in anyway. To use the bathroom you must secure a pass
and carry it with you.
-
Keep a theatre binder, into which you will place all
handouts, notes, etc. for this class.
-
Always be prepared with text, notebook, assignment,
paper, pen and PENCIL, for writing in scripts.
-
There is no food or drink in the black box or theatre
ever. Bottled water is allowed.
-
NO GUM EVER! If you are chewing gum and I have to stop
class to ask you to spit it out, 10 points will be taken from your daily
grade.
-
CELLPHONES!!! If I see a cell phone or MP3 player for any
reason I will take it up and turn it in to the front office. It will be
turned into the office at MY convenience which may not be until the next
day... or even the day after. If I have to take either item a second
time, I will personally call your parents and make them come pick it up
from me.

Make-up work.
The county requires that make up work be offered for excused
absences. It is the student’s responsibility to initiate make-up work,
NOT THE TEACHER”S!!! The student must complete all work within the
prescribed time. Should an absence be prearranged, students are to
return to class prepared. For any other absence, the student has the
number of days absent to make up the work: one day absent gives one day
make-up work.
To make up a grade for an excused absence from school you must do the
following:
Choose one of the following theories of acting and research the topic.
Write and turn in a 700 word, typed paper outlining the acting theory, its’
creator, location of creation, advocates, students, adversaries, etc.
The paper must be typed and well thought
out, articulate and not plagiarized.
- Constantine Stanislavski
- Lee Strasberg
- Stella Adler
- Sanford Meisner
- Viola Spolin
- Bertold Brecht
- Jerzy Grotowski
As outlined above, the student must initiate the make-up work and turn it
in within the prescribed time. To make up an excused absence from the
showcase rehearsal or performance you must choose 5 of the theories and
write a 10 page paper, double space, typed comparing and contrasting the
theories. You must also memorize and perform for your class, two contrasting
monologues from a scripted, published play. Each monologue must come from a
different play. You must write a 2 page biographical paper on each
playwright from which the monologues come.
All of the theatre classes
will be creating an original piece which will be performed in a showcase at
the end of the semester. Each student in this class is required to attend
the after school rehearsal and performance for the showcase. The rehearsal
is December 10th from 3:30-6:00 and the performance is that same
day at 7:00 p.m. If you can not make this rehearsal and/or performance you
will need to take another class as this performance is the culmination of
all things learned throughout the semester and is a requirement for
participation in this class. Failure to attend either the rehearsal or
performance will result in failure of the
class. Course Description :
In this course we explore further the skills learned in Acting I. We will
focus on auditioning, cold reading, monologues, scripted scenes, and
character development. If time allows, this class will produce a one-act
production to be performed as part of the Milton Theatre Season. This class
will also culminate in the creation of an original piece to be performed in
a theatre showcase.

Recovery Policy
Opportunities designed to allow students to recover from a low or failing
cumulative grade will be allowed when all work required to date has been
completed and the student has demonstrated a legitimate effort to meet all
course requirements including attendance. Students should contact the
teacher concerning recovery opportunities. Teachers are expected to
establish a reasonable time period for recovery work to be completed during
the semester. All recovery work must be directly related to course
objectives and must be completed ten school days prior to the end of
the semester
.
Teachers will determine when and how students with
extenuating circumstances may improve their grades.
