Classroom Expectations

My principal goal in this class is to provide you the best possible opportunity and learning environment to reach your highest potential in the learning and application of technical theatre skills. In order for you to take maximum advantage of this opportunity I have certain expectations of how you should behave.

  1. At all times follow safety rules, and participate in no activity which could endanger yourself or another student.

  2. Be respectful to all members of our class, and take no actions which could hinder their learning opportunities. Please raise your hand to ask or answer a question. Your participation is wanted, but everyone must have the same opportunity to participate.

  3. Be responsible for your own actions and learning. It is assumed that you will abide by the Eagle Honour Code (see student handbook), and will not partake in any action that would in any way unfairly benefit your, or another student’s, grade

  4. You are expected to be in class, on time every day; you should go to the bathroom or your locker before you come to the classroom. Tardies and unexcused absences to class will be dealt with according to school policy.

  5. If you are absent it exclusively your responsibility to find out from classmates all work and homework you missed and complete it promptly. For every day that you are absent you will have one day to make up missed work. It is also your responsibility to make up any quizzes/tests that you missed because of your absence. Quizzes/tests can only be made up BEFORE school at 7:30 a.m. or earlier. For every day that you are absent you will have one day to make up missed quizzes/tests. Making up missed work takes precedence over meetings.

  6. Be prepared for class. This means bringing all materials required for the class that day and clothing appropriate to that day’s activity.

  7. Please do not eat, drink, chew gum whilst in the theatre or in my classroom.

Course Description

Stagecraft is a study of the techniques, materials and concept that go into the creation of the visual elements of the living art that is theatre. This course is designed as an introduction to scene design, set construction, lighting design, sound design and stage management. Much of the course is a hands-on approach in which, working both individually and in groups, you will explore the technical and design aspects of theatre. In addition to the in-class projects you will be required to work on the current productions. This work may be as a member of one of the running crews or as part of the construction crew. The class is designed so that you will be using the skills and ideas learned in class on a live production. The stagecraft students become part of a live theatre experience. Each student will have an individual creative project due at the end of the term.

This is a PRODUCTION class. You will be working in groups with other students to create products that will be used in Milton’s theatre productions. Your participation in these groups is necessary for the success of these productions. Do not take these responsibilities lightly, you will be held accountable for your work.

**Students will be working with tools, building scenery and painting sets during class and outside of school. This course is a lab class and participation in these activities is mandatory to receive credit. Students will be notified in advance when it is necessary to bring paint clothes or other appropriate attire to class, though it can be assumed that on any day that they may be working around sawdust.

Safety

Safety is one of the most important lessons that students will learn in Technical Theatre. Students will be working with power tools, other tools, working at heights, moving heavy objects and dealing with expensive equipment. Safety of oneself and ones fellow students is critical at all times. Safety procedures and guidelines will be discussed in class. It is crucial that students become familiar with, and adhere to these rules at all times.
