Classrrom Procedures

Attitude: A positive attitude and strong work ethic is essential to be a part of the theatre program. In theatre you will not always get the lead role and sometimes you will not get a role at all. But if you love theatre and are involved for the right reasons you will be willing to take on any new experience in theatre and try to gain something from it. This attitude will get you far in this program. A student who is not cast in a lead role today but works hard and has a "do anything" attitude will certainly have a lead role in their future.

Classroom Procedures:

  1. Mandatory Class Participation and Attendance. A majority of your grade in a theatre class is based on your participation in every assignment. You must at least try and have a good attitude. Failure to at least try results in a zero for the assignment and a negative attitude negatively affects your grade.

  2. Humor is encouraged, but it should never be used at the expense of others. Please use good taste. Be sensitive to others.

  3. Rehearse your presentations carefully to avoid any statements, gestures, or actions that might be perceived as offensive to others.

  4. Avoid racially or gender-related offensive stereotypical characteristics.

  5. Avoid materials with coarse or inappropriate language or offensive subject matter. See Mrs. Denney prior to performances for approval if there is any doubt in your mind about that suitability of the material.

  6. Avoid inappropriate sexual references and innuendoes.

  7. Avoid scenes that portray substance abuse unless it is keeping with intent of the playwright.

  8. Avoid profanity, vulgarities of speech or action, cursing, or bathroom humor.

  9. Be aware that students in this classroom are a captive audience. Be considerate of everyone's feelings. You are responsible for what you say and do in front of such an audience.

Classroom Behavior:

  1. Be in your assigned seat when the bell rings or you will be tardy.

  2. Dispose of garbage when you leave the classroom.

  3. Respect the room and its furnishings.

  4. Do not enter Mrs. Denney's office without permission.

  5. Do not touch or move any materials in the black box.

  6. Make up work is totally your responsibility. Get the phone numbers of three classmates to obtain missed assignments.

  7. As this is a theatre class please behave as cultured, educated young adults.

  8. Detentions can be assigned for unacceptable behavior and tardies. Detention must be served before school from 7:45-8:15. If you misbehave and earn a detention it is your responsibility to arrange transportation.

  9. No HATS in the black box or theatre.

  10. Do not ask to use the bathroom during a lecture, discussion or performance. You may use the bathroom only when it will not disrupt class in anyway. To use the bathroom you must secure a pass and carry it with you.

  11. Keep a theatre binder, into which you will place all handouts, notes, etc. for this class.

  12. Always be prepared with text, notebook, assignment, paper, pen and PENCIL, for writing in scripts.

  13. There is no food or drink in the black box or theatre ever. Bottled water is allowed.

  14. NO GUM EVER! If you are chewing gum and I have to stop class to ask you to spit it out, 10 points will be taken from your daily grade.

  15. CELLPHONES!!! If I see a cell phone or MP3 player for any reason I will take it up and turn it in to the front office. It will be turned into the office at MY convenience which may not be until the next day... or even the day after. If I have to take either item a second time, I will personally call your parents and make them come pick it up from me.

THEATRE OFFICE: The theatre office at Milton High School is the business office of the Milton High School Theatre Director. Please treat the office as such. The telephone is off limits to students except in an emergency. All rehearsal times are published well in advance, so parents should not need a phone call to verify that we have dismissed on time. If there are any questions regarding the theatre program, do not hesitate to call the Office. You may leave a message on voice mail during the day and I will return your call as soon as possible. You may also reach me through email at the following address: denneyr@fultonschools.org
